Watch The Ride

Andrew Weatherall (born 6 April 1963, Windsor, England) is a DJ, producer, and remixer. Starting off with his work alongside DJ Paul Oakenfold on the “Hallelujah” remix for the Happy Mondays, Weatherall entered the fray of the indie rock and acid house sounds of Madchester. Other remixes followed, including “World in Motion” by New Order and “Loaded”, a hit remix of Primal Scream’s earlier track “I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have“. He joined fellow scenesters Terry Farley and Pete Heller to form Boy’s Own, initially a magazine commenting on football, fashion, records, etc. They also did parties, and had a record label under the name of Boys Own Recordings (which went on to be called Junior Boy’s Own in 1992 upon Weatherall’s departure). Along with engineer Hugo Nicholson and singer Anna Haigh, they released two singles as Bocca Juniors on Boys Own Records, “Raise (53 Steps to Heaven)” and the lesser known “Substance”.He formed the dub trio The Sabres of Paradise in 1993, and promoted the Bloodsugar and Sabresonic warehouse raves. In early 1996, after shutting down Sabresonic, Weatherall and Keith Tenniswood became Two Lone Swordsmen signing to Warp Records label and setting up Rotters Golf Club for their own dancefloor-orientated work.Weatherall also has cited humor as an important component in his musical ideology. With This new album mix , Kicking off with Roy Montgomery’s lush spoken word diatribe ‘London Is Swinging By His Neck‘, Andrew eases into the mix segueing into the rolling rhythms of Beatville’s ‘Keeping Barry In Check‘ then dropping the first of a series of his own remixes with the Black Lips ‘Veni Vidi Vici’, a head nodding rock trip-out. The Gallic grooves of Cosmo Vitelli’s ‘Converted’ take’s the mix into deeper territory before Andrew serves up a curveball with the post-punk dub of Maximum Joy’s ‘Let It Take You There’ rolling into the twisted stabbing jazzy riffs of Mock & Toof’s ‘Beat Up’ and Andrew’s mix of ESC’s ‘Legacy’.The funky throb of Padded Cell’s ‘Far Beneath London’ takes the energy levels up a notch switching between live grooves and techy stabs as Andrew drops a piece of infectious genius with the Chicken Lips Malfunction mix of Love Is All’s ‘Make Out Fall Out Make Up’. Andrew’s own pounding rub down of Siouxsie Sioux’s majestic ‘Into A Swan’ and Simian Mobile Disco’s ‘State Of Things’ keep the space dub vibes to the fore as Andrew enters the final straight with Fairmont’s pulsating ‘Fade and Saturate’ and the soaring euro electro-pop of Au Revoir Simone. Alloy Mental’s ‘Seconds’ driving grooves and the blissfully wonky psychedelia of The Oscillation’s ‘Saturn 5′ lead into ‘Watch The Ride’s final track from synth and drum duo and solid gold legends Silver Apples.

Joris Voorn

Joris Voorn is a producer, a DJ, a live act and a visual artist. Like many Dutchmen, he makes techno with a nod to Detroit, first pricking up ears in 2004 with the release of the ‘The Lost Memories’ EPs which included the big dancefloor cuts ‘Missing’ and ‘Incident’, the latter of which became one of the most hammered anthems of the year. Since then Voorn has released two full lengths albums, ‘Future History’ and this year’s ‘From a Deep Place’, both of which fused together deep house, old skool Detroit and even some ambient landscapes.Aside from his own bleeps and bloops, Voorn also spins records. Last year his debut mix compilation for Belgian club Fuse headed in a more minimal direction, fusing together Detroit classics from Robert Hood, Carl Craig and Jeff Mills with newer outings from Sleeparchive, Marc Houle and Matthew Dear. Those who’ve heard ‘Fuse’ or one of Voorn’s high energy live shows might be surprised by his RA podcast though: This one is fifty-four minutes of deep house meets ambient with an emphasis on silky synths and even silkier vocals.

[IC002]Tala - Mandragora (Inc. Cosmic Sandwich Remix)

Iconise’s second release features four variations on a deep techno theme, as we invite three distinct production talents to remix Tala’s ‘Mandragora’.Based in Argentina, Tala debuted with his acclaimed remix of ‘War In Donga’ (Iconise 001). Deep and heartfelt, Tala style is a blend of springing, melody-heavy techno (think Sascha Funke, or maybe Superpitcher) with the stripped-back feel of contemporary minimal house. His original version of ‘Madragora’ is a low paced, quietly romantic pulser, ideal for deeper dancefloor moments, or late night listening pleasure.Fittingly for a Brighton-based label, we’re pleased to welcome Cosmic Sandwich on remix duties. A born and bread local, Steve Barnes relocated to Cologne some years back, and went on to produced a string of acclaimed tracks and remixes for Traum, Trapez and My Best Friend. His warm, dub-spiked rework tweaks the pace for a plaintive club-burner in his typically rich style.Next up we welcome newcomer Marcel Oelke, a brand new German talent. His remix strips the original back to its minimal roots, inserting a bumping contemporary groove and a smattering of textured harmonics. Smart, unpretentious and brimming with potential, it’s a fine start from this young artist. Finally, we return to Brighton for Danzai’s remix. Layering dripping percussion clips over Detroit-ish string swathes and a deftly arranged groove, it’s a fittingly emotive end to the release.

2: Mandragora (Cosmic Sandwich Remix)
3: Mandragora (Marcel Oelke Remix)

No Model No Tool

How many times his gig to istanbul canceled? Good question. These days minimal star Luciano is living the quiet life in rural Switzerland. His lifestyle change happened approximately a year ago, when Luciano moved from Berlin to Bossey, a small Swiss village near the French border.Luciano: “My philosophy is that a DJ should always try to transport emotions onto the dancefloor. To dig deep and bring everything up that mattered emotionally in their life, that made them laugh, everything that caused sensations. To try to transport that from their childhood to the now. You know, I’m very influenced by melodies I heard in my childhood. I never studied music. All my skills came from my own ear.” An Introduction Minimal just got messier.Minimal techno has always been about stripping things down to their essence. The series is a riff on the old idea of “DJ tools” offering stripped-down tracks meant to be mixed in performance. Now, with Cadenza’s Split Composition series, the opposite approach comes into play: building a new sound, and a new tradition, from the beats up.Each edition will consist of four sides of vinyl broken out into several skeletal rhythm tracks and a handful of supplementary parts: ambient fantasias, shimmering drones, treated vocals, electro-acoustic collages. The series is a riff on the old idea of “DJ tools” offering stripped-down tracks meant to be mixed in performance. So thats the idea, but is it worth spending over a tenner on as Luciano shares some original tools crafted only for those who dare to dive into creative waters ie these are tools and not tracks. Saying that, lead track “Keridos” is a shimmering techno surface that evolves over 10 minutes. “Saulitude” has an amazing bassline that is perfect for afterhours but its the ambient tools that, whilst not gonna encourage a DJ to buy it, could be both.

Tracks:

1 Keridos
2 Saulitude
3 Toneites
4 Afghan Birds
5 Alternated Tones
6 Somewhere Near His Heart
7 Le Chant
8 Inner Sirens
