Heavy Day

Artist:Falko Brocksieper
Title:Heavy Day
Label:Substatic
Date:24 03 2008
Genre:Techno
Subgenre:Techno, Minimal, Dub

Co-founded the Sub Static label in 2000 with M.I.A., and later the Karloff sub-label in 2003. Now based in Berlin. Frequencies are swines, every audio-autodidact knows about that. Making music is hard work at the analytical front, every bar just a tiny territorial gain, that neverending scramble between wetware and software. And when the exhausted lonesome hero finally stumbles outside, then it was just another day in the coal-mines of techno, a long day, a heavy day, everyday life. But sometimes all the troubles aren‘t for nothing, sometimes the ring-bounded eye can capture a shine and glitter in the dried-out riverbed, a rough diamond in the digged boulders, ready to get rasped and polished like anything. The last bus home is gone? Never mind. Sleep at the studio? Whatever it takes. Sacrifices are being made and not being born. And all are equal before the flow. In all that sense, SUB STATIC boss FALKO BROCKSIEPER has now processed a big issue, after a remarkable number of EPs and remixes: the second-album itch. Nightmare to every musician and conceptual contra on tasty techno in 5-minute-salsa with b-side. All in all not a bed of roses. A real Brocksieper though is always king of the hill in his own track, souvereignly dominating beats and melodies, again and again transferring it all into that airy funky joinin- groove thats his trademark. Unisono to definite floor pushers like Lament and The Whole Story though, HEAVY DAY also features a great portion of organic organ- house, plucked violin-techno and pleasant dub-tronica, only to name a few of the opened drawers. Next to the machines, this time RICHARD DAVIS, BIG BULLY and MIA are in on it, with grammy-like performances of their throat arts, as lyrical as focused, into the blue to the point, spun over the beats by expert hands. What? This doesn‘t sound like hard work? Rather like having an easy good time? Right. Mission accomplished.

In The Name of Bushtech

Alex Van Heerden - In the name of Bushtech

First work for Sinergy-Networks by Alex Van Heerden, musician and producer coming from City of the Cabo (South Africa) and with habitual residence in Stockholm. Altogether eight cuts that demonstrate the great musical capacity of this craftsman of academic formation, an authentic explorer in search of new borders for music with an original and extremely elegant sound.A brilliant work, deep, full of recondite landscapes and served with great doses of eclecticism. With a layer of fine minimal tech as base platform, Heerden adds the right measured of dub, funk, jazz and experimentation and demonstrates his ability to work between analog and digital, between Africa-Jamaica and Berlin. Warm emotions fused perfectly with the hypnosis that provides sutile atmospheres, the echoes and the harmonic structures, complex but very seductive and full of very small details with care. Heerden collaborates habitually with producers of the Scandinavian scene, in this occasion with Magnus Bank in “Nefertiti” enters a glitch and jazz aesthetic. On the other hand the collaboration with Hakan Lidbo contributes a new context to tech-dub, impregnated of space jazz. Each instrument, each click and each blow seem to be in consonance within its space and time to obtain an atemporal work that it is possible to be enjoyed in as many forms as its presented. Without waste.

Zinga

Artist: Italoboyz
Title: Zinga
Label: Get Physical Music
Style: Techno, Tech House, Minimal, Deep
Released: 19 Jan 2008

Ever since they moved to the UK back in 2000, Italoboyz, aka Marco Donato and Federico Marton, have built a formidable reputation in the fertile minimal techno scene of their adopted hometown London, their energetic DJ sets at FESH the stuff of local legend. Their productions, meanwhile, have seen them gain notoriety around the world. The duo have released on influential labels like Einmaleins, Treibstoff, Safari Electronique and Gumption; their 2006 “Programmer” track in particular remains a modern classic of minimal. It was their recent single “Viktor Casonova”, though, which signalled the beginning of a new mature phase in Italoboyz’ career. A breathtakingly original piece of dance music, not to mention the inaugural release on on Claude VonStroke’s Mothership imprint, “Viktor Casanova” set a plaintive, disembodied opera vocal against gritty, reductionist beats - the result was an instantly recognizable dancefloor killer, a fixture in all discerning DJs’ boxes.

[IC002]Tala - Mandragora (Inc. Cosmic Sandwich Remix)

Iconise’s second release features four variations on a deep techno theme, as we invite three distinct production talents to remix Tala’s ‘Mandragora’.Based in Argentina, Tala debuted with his acclaimed remix of ‘War In Donga’ (Iconise 001). Deep and heartfelt, Tala style is a blend of springing, melody-heavy techno (think Sascha Funke, or maybe Superpitcher) with the stripped-back feel of contemporary minimal house. His original version of ‘Madragora’ is a low paced, quietly romantic pulser, ideal for deeper dancefloor moments, or late night listening pleasure.Fittingly for a Brighton-based label, we’re pleased to welcome Cosmic Sandwich on remix duties. A born and bread local, Steve Barnes relocated to Cologne some years back, and went on to produced a string of acclaimed tracks and remixes for Traum, Trapez and My Best Friend. His warm, dub-spiked rework tweaks the pace for a plaintive club-burner in his typically rich style.Next up we welcome newcomer Marcel Oelke, a brand new German talent. His remix strips the original back to its minimal roots, inserting a bumping contemporary groove and a smattering of textured harmonics. Smart, unpretentious and brimming with potential, it’s a fine start from this young artist. Finally, we return to Brighton for Danzai’s remix. Layering dripping percussion clips over Detroit-ish string swathes and a deftly arranged groove, it’s a fittingly emotive end to the release.

2: Mandragora (Cosmic Sandwich Remix)
3: Mandragora (Marcel Oelke Remix)
4: Mandragora (Danzai Remix)
