Richie Hawtin provides RA’s historic 100th podcast!

Perhaps the most celebrated techno DJ in the world, Hawtin has been at the cutting edge of dance music for more than a decade-and-a-half. Whether it’s his future-forward productions and mixes, his work in developing Final Scratch, or in defining minimal techno via his M_nus label, Richie Hawtin has become one of electronic music’s most recognisable figures.
What makes Hawtin so fascinating in 2008, though, is his continued interest in the newest technology and sounds available. At the beginning of the year, Hawtin and the rest of the M_nus imprint underwent ‘10 Weeks of Silence’, a break that saw Hawtin officially jettison vinyl altogether. It’s not a new thing for many - plenty of DJs have gone the digital route - but, per usual, Richie is using his new setup to challenge the limits of what a traditional DJ set. With his RA.100 mix, Hawtin gives us an exclusive look into how the set is coming together, weaving together 60 minutes of snippets from deep house, techno, minimal and more. It’s a testing lab for what might just be the next DE9 mix. Enjoy.

Spread over five days, the program is divided into three kinds of events: avant electronics and classical at the A/Visions events, Nocturne club nights, and a final two days of outdoor parties at Mutek/Piknic. Not to mention various panels and discussions on the Digi-Session program, which takes place during the day.In terms of club nights, Wednesday will feature a Detroit techno party featuring Underground Resistance, Thursday is a night of techno with Sleeparchive and Cristian Vogel, Friday is a varied bill that ranges from German nuttiness (Modeselektor) to turntablism (Kid Koala) to minimal (Half Hawaii), while the big party at Metropolis on Saturday features Carl Craig, Chloé, Nôze and The Field in the main room and Kode9, Quiet Village and Deadbeat in the lounge. The experimental program A/Visions includes an electronic classical night on Wednesday (Murcof, Morgan Packard and Joshue Ott), a film vs. sound concert featuring Rechenzentrum on Thursday, and a night of avant-guitar electronics with Fennesz and Tim Hecker. On the weekend, the party moves outside to Parc Jean-Drapeau with dubstep on the Saturday (Kode9 & Spaceape, Martyn) and minimal techno and house on the Sunday (Radio Slave, Mathias Kaden, Onur Özer.) And with over a third of the Mutek attendees arriving from out the Montreal area, it will also be a bit of an international gathering. The Alchemy Index Vols. III And IV Air And Earth

Artist: Thrice
Album: The Alchemy Index Vols. III And IV Air And Earth
Label: Vagrant Records
Playtime: 45:10 min
Genre: Rock

Thrice’s boundary pushing continues with the second installment of the Alchemy Index series. Volumes 1&2 (Fire & Water), released in October of last year, were met with tremendous critical acclaim and fanfare. Fans and critics
were especially impressed with the Water side and just how far the band had pushed the parameters of what they can do as professional musicians. The Ear and Air series show two more sides of the band that anyone has yet to see. The Earth side will showcase a more stripped down, raw element of the band, while Air will expose a more soft rock side. One thing is for certain. No one really knows where Thrice’s music is going, and their fans seem to like it just fine that way..
